Alumni working toward a sustainable future
Wednesday, 3 April 2024
Bringing our alumni back to Carey to share their expertise, passions and experiences with our students is one of the many privileges we have with such a connected community. In March, a sustainability-themed assembly saw a panel with three Carey alumni talk about possible career paths in sustainability that our students might consider.

Over the past few years, Carey has had a renewed commitment to sustainability, and we recently announced our goal to achieve net zero emissions. This has been inspired in part by our Strategic Direction Statement for 2023 onwards, and by our understanding of our responsibility to protect this planet for all of our students – past, current and future.

Our students have also shown a great deal of interest in contributing to Carey becoming a more environmentally conscious place, with the formation of our Middle School and Senior School Eco-Warriors. These groups present students with opportunities to engage in active sustainability work as well as learning more about the impact they can have. Some projects these student groups have to look forward to include participating in an Environmental Leadership Training Program and developing a Wildlife Garden at Carey’s Kew campus. Both programs will have the benefit of expert guidance from staff at CERES (Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies), and sponsorship from Boroondara Council.

It was also the leader of the Senior School Eco-Warriors, Harry in Year 12, who co-ordinated the sustainability assembly to share these opportunities with other students and bring some of our alumni back to talk about their career paths.

As well as an impressive guest speaker, Lucianne Tonti, Fashion Editor at The Saturday Paper, who spoke about sustainability in the fashion industry, students were presented with a panel including three Carey alumni – Scott McKenry (1994), Johanna Tachas (2015) and Tim Bush (2004) – as well as Ashlee Lambton, who is working with many schools, including Carey, in the ResourceSmart Schools Program.

Carey Alumni Panellist Bios:
Scott McKenry (1994)

After graduating from Carey in 1994, Tim went on to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science at Swinburne University and a Bachelor of Science at Latrobe University, specialising in Environmental Science. Scott is currently the Executive Officer for the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (EAGA), a formal collaboration of eight councils committed to facilitating the transition to net zero in their local regions by 2023. His previous roles have included Founder and Director of Citizen Consulting, Engagement, and Manager for ClimateWorks Australia.

Johanna Tachas (2015)

Johanna graduated from Carey in 2015. After leaving Carey, she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Ecology and Environmental Biology, and a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management at the Australian National University, Canberra. Johanna is currently working as a Program Officer for The Nature Fund with responsibilities including program documentation, project planning, stakeholder communication and networking across government departments to encourage and facilitate conservation of threatened species. Her previous roles have included Program Manager for Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement with the Port Philip Region, and Co-ordinator of Volunteers for Coastcare Victoria.

Tim Bush (2004)

Tim graduated from Carey in 2004 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at Monash University. Tim is currently working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the role of APAC Sustainability Lead – Data Centre Design where he is involved in reducing carbon dioxide emissions of AWS’s new data centres. His previous roles include Associate Director of Norman, Disney and Young, and Director – LEED Certification (SANGHA Specialised Hospitals Program).

Thank you to our alumni panellists for their contributions and for taking time out of their busy schedules to come and share their experiences with our students.
