Old Carey Cricket cup Matches
Tuesday, 2 April 2024
This year, the Old Carey Cricket Club continued its proud tradition of hosting the David Lord Cup, contested between the Carey Boys Cricket First XI and the Old Carey Cricket Men's team and the Robyn Macready Bryan Cup, contested between the Carey Girls  Cricket First XI and the Old Carey Cricket Women's team.

The David Lord Cup has been held in honour of OCGA Honoured Life Member David Lord since 1999.

David was a Carey student from 1943 to 1953. He was a member of the Cricket First XI from 1951-1953 and in 1953 was appointed as Head Prefect and School Captain.
Two years after graduating Carey, David established the Old Carey Cricket Club in 1955 and later became its first Honorary Life Member.

David joined the Carey staff in 1960 and was a loyal full time-Carey staff member for 38 years until 1997. During this period he coached Carey cricket for 30 years, was the Foundation Head of Hickman House and served as a Head of House for 25 years. In 1989 he was appointed Director of Development and Executive Director of the Carey Foundation. In this role he oversaw the fundraising of $1.5 million which was used to build the Geoffrey Stevens Swimming Pool at Bulleen.
After officially retiring from Carey, he still served the school in a part-time capacity as Chief Supervisor of VCE Examinations and Chief Supervisor of IB Examinations.

David is a true legend of Carey, the Old Carey Cricket Club and the OCGA and it is extremely fitting that the Cup is held in his honour. Sadly, David was unable to attend and present the trophy in person this year and he was sorely missed.

The crowd of families and friends gathered enjoyed watching a friendly, yet competitive match of 20/20 Cricket between the two teams.

It was an incredibly close game with the Old Carey team winning by just two runs!
Following the match, the students, alumni, families, friends and staff were able to come together for a relaxed summer barbeque as the sun set.

The Robyn Macready Cup was also a fantastic event and was a  wonderful way to kick off the week of International Women's Day.

This event honours the rich legacy that Robyn Macready Bryan has left both upon Carey and the Old Carey Cricket Club. Robyn joined Carey in 1981 as a Chemistry teacher, fresh out of university. As described in the 2017 Carey Chronicle, "As soon as she arrived, Robyn was a wonderful role model for the Carey girls... Robyn was tough and determined, and she helped to ensure the ongoing success of co-education at Carey... Robyn’s contribution to establishing the co-educational Carey we know today is without peer, and will always be so."

Robyn served the school as a loyal member of staff for 37 years and took on various roles including Head of Mathematics and Information Technology. Robyn also had a huge impact on girls’ engagement in sport at Carey. She organised sporting fixtures in her early years, using contacts at local schools to give Carey girls the chance to compete and feel legitimate within the male-dominated APS sports competition of that time.

Robyn was instrumental in the introduction of girls cricket at Carey. She coached the girls to undefeated success in the Eastern Suburbs Association competition, and took her teams to the Victorian Schoolgirls’ grand final on several occasions.

Encouraged by past Carey Board Chair and OCGA Honoured Life Member Jeffrey O Thomas, Robyn also established the Old Carey Women's Cricket team, which she captained to a Premiership in 1983.

It was wonderful to have Robyn join us to watch a great game of Cricket and present the Cup following the match. Despite being involved with Carey girls' cricket for over four decades, this year's match was the first time Robyn has ever seen girls' cricket played on Dunshea Oval, which she was truly delighted by.

The Bulleen Grounds at both of these events were impeccable as always. Huge thanks to OCGA Companion Jim Keppell and his team for ensuring the facilities were in pristine condition for the match.

A big thank you also to the Old Carey Cricket Club President Chris Angus, Vice President Jack Quartermain, Secretary Tad Merry and Carey Head of Sport Paul Jepson for the effort they put into planning and organising these special events.
