Old Gold Rowing Event
Tuesday, 2 April 2024
Our recent Old Gold Rowing event was a tremendous success

The event started with spectacular races between the Carey First XIII boys and girls rowing crews and our "Old Gold" male and female rowing crews. An excited crowd of alumni, families and friends lined the banks of the Yarra to watch these epic races.

Following these races, we then witnessed four Boat Naming Ceremonies, with boats being named after Old Carey Grammarians who have gone one to row for Australia: Lucy Jepson, Anthony Johnson, Derek Mollison and Michelle Yann. It was lovely to have all four of these rowers in attendance, in particular Lucy, Anthony and Michelle who had all travelled from interstate especially.

Michelle Yann rowed in the 1st VIII at Carey in 2006 and 2007. She was a dedicated rower at school and a leader in her peer group. She was respected for her tenacity, strength and for the potential to achieve success post school.

That didn’t take very long as the following year in 2008 she rowed in the Victorian Youth VIII at the Interstate regatta and again in 2009. She also rowed and achieved success in the in the Victorian Youth Cup team.

Michelle broke into the Elite pathway winning the National Championship in the women's pair in 2014, while also winning the women's VIII. She then rowed in the 2014 Australian Women’s VIII for the World Championships. The crew also rowed at Henley Royal Regatta.

Following her International rowing career, Michelle competed at Club, State and National level in surfboats for Lorne SLSC. Her 2018 crew went on to win the World surf boat championship title in 2018.

Derek Mollisson stroked the 1980 Carey 1st VIII which finished 6th at the Head of the River.

Post school Derek rowed for Mercantile. His peers describe him as a very strong, uncompromising athlete, who was meticulous in his preparation.

Later in his career he was revered for his experience rowing as and with some of the legends of Victorian and Australian lightweight rowing

Derek rowed for Australia eight times at the Senior level.
•    In 1985, 1987, 1990 and 1991 in the Lightweight Eight
•    In 1988, 1992 and 1995 in the Lightweight Four
•    And in 1994 in the Lightweight Pair

Prior to this Derek also represented Australia twice at the Under 23 level U23 level in 1983 and 1984.

Lucy Jepson was a four-year rower while attending Carey and also competed in netball, track and field and diving. She served as captain of Boats during her senior season and stroked the First XIII.

She went to Junior Trials and was selected to row in the Australian Junior VIII for the 2014 Junior World Championships in the Stroke seat

Post school Lucy rowed for Melbourne University Boat Club and earned National championships rowing in the Under 21 Women's Eight and the Under 23 Women's Eight .

In 2015 Lucy headed to UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) and joined their Varsity program. She rowed in the Firsts crew for the 2018 and 2019 seasons and received All Academic Honours in both those years.

Anthony (Johno) finished his rowing at Carey Grammar in 1982 and is still a rower at Mercantile Rowing Club today. This boat is long overdue given Johno’s great rowing career. Johno rowed in the 1982 Head of the River Carey first crew in the six seat famously finishing second to Melbourne Grammar. There were no photo finishes in those days and the margin was so small there was some controversy as to who the winner actually was.

As soon as year 12 exams finished, Johno went straight down to Mercantile Rowing Club and and began a superb rowing career winning many National Championships and representing the country at Under 23 and Open level.

Johno rowed in and won the 1984 Interstate Championships in the Victorian Youth Eight. In 1986 and 1997 he was in the Australian Under 23 Trans Tasman team.

In 1988 Johno travelled to the USA and UK in the Australian Youth Development rowing crew and won the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.

Johno made his first Australian Senior team rowing in the 1989 World Championships in the Coxless Four and the following year in 1990 Coxed Four.

Johno was renowned for being tenacious, a competitive racer on water but one of the nicest guys on the bank.

After the Boat Naming Ceremonies, about 60 rowing alumni went up to the boat sheds to enjoy a cocktail party funded by the OCGA. It was a lovely opportunity for everyone to socialise, reconnect and reminisce.

It was a wonderful evening for our Carey rowing community. If you are a former rower and would be interested in attending future Old Gold Rowing events, please email dick.bartlett@carey.com.au
