Australia Day Honours 2024
Thursday, 14 March 2024

We are proud to announce two Old Carey Grammarian's who have been recognised and awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to the community through social welfare initiatives and through service to secondary education.

Toni Joel (1982) created the charity, Off Your Back in 2003 and, since its establishment, has provided over 300,000 pre-loved coats to Victorians in need! The charity has grown over the years, now embracing company contributions, tireless efforts from individual volunteers, and school collections – Carey is one of many schools to participate in a winter coat drive.

Toni, who is also co-founder and director of personal care product business, Tonic, got the idea for her charity when out one night and noticed a man lying on a park bench on a freezing winter evening. ‘In that moment, I was moved to strip the coat off my back, offering a layer of warmth to someone in desperate need,’ Toni says.

If you would like to find out more about Toni's charitable work, please head to her charity website; offyourback

Congratulations Toni. Your work inspires us and serves as a reminder of the impact an individual can have.

The OCGA proudly congratulates Carey Medallist Bruce Murray (1960) who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours 2024 for his service to secondary education and community.

Bruce’s service to the Carey community over the past 75 years as a student, staff member, Old Carey Grammarian and passionate volunteer have transformed the Carey community and positively impacted countless individuals.

Bruce started at Carey in 1949 and graduated in 1961 as School Captain. He then returned to Carey as a teacher in 1973. Bruce was a devoted and beloved member of staff for 33 years and took on positions of responsibility including Housemaster of Moore House, School Registrar, Director of Community Relations and Director of Alumni Relations.

Following his retirement, he has continued to serve the Carey community through his involvement on the Carey Heritage Committee (25 years), Carey Medal Committee (15+ years) and the Centenary Book Committee.

For over 60 years, Bruce has been a passionate member and rich contributor to the Old Carey Grammarians Association and served with distinction as Vice-President and Secretary. His service to the OCGA was formally recognised when he was inducted as an Honoured Life Member in 1991.

Bruce is an extremely generous, kind and caring individual who always seeks to support others and bring people together. He is a truly deserving recipient for recognition by the Order of Australia Council and we join him in celebrating such a prestigious award.
