A message from the Principal
Friday, 19 January 2024

Dear Carey Alumni,

I write to you regarding a media story which has emerged today in relation to alleged historical abuse at the School. The article references impending legal proceedings relating to claims made by three past students who attended Carey in the 1980s.

The School is not aware of the basis of these claims and have not been contacted by these former students. The associated legal firm has not reached out to Carey with any information or inquiry. We would warmly encourage any affected individuals to make contact with us directly so that we can offer you our care and support.

Carey is aware of the great pain suffered by so many families that have been impacted by sexual abuse in schools, churches and community groups in past decades. In 2015, during the Australian Royal Commission into Sexual Abuse, Carey proactively reached out to our school community, inviting any member of our community to contact us if they thought they had been subjected to any such abuse in their time at Carey. In 2022, Carey joined the National Redress Scheme to ensure we are positioned well to support anyone who may have experienced child sexual abuse at the School.

Today, Carey continues to welcome any member of our school community to contact the School if they have been subjected to sexual abuse whilst at Carey so that we may offer the appropriate care and support. Whilst respecting the confidentiality of any person who comes forward, Carey would also fulfil its mandatory reporting responsibilities and fully cooperate with any police investigations and court proceedings.

Please be assured that Carey has very clear and strong student protection measures in place as well as stringent standards in the selection, training and management of all staff and we are committed to ensuring Carey provides an environment where students feel safe and happy and can thrive.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like a confidential conversation with me about these matters at principal@carey.com.au

Yours sincerely,

Jonathan Walter
Principal
