2023 OCGA Awards
Thursday, 14 December 2023
At our End of Year Council, the OCGA Council bestowed several prestigious honours to deserving members of our community.

Companion of the OCGA - Val and Max Evans
Val Evans and her beloved late husband Max were inducted as Companions of the Old Carey Grammarians Association, in recognition of their sustained and committed service to the objectives, spirit, and ethos of the Old Carey Grammarians Association.

Val and Max were passionate and devoted servants of the Old Carey Grammarians Football Club for many decades. Their various contributions in a variety of other roles both formal and informal were a lifeblood of the Club for many years. Val and Max have made the Old Carey Grammarians Football Club what is today and have had a profound impact on the lives of generations of Old Carey families.

Val additionally served Carey as a devoted staff member from 1974 -2002. She remains a passionate and enthusiastic supporter of the Carey community. She was proudly supporting the Old Carey Grammarians Women’s Football team at their Grand Final this year and went into the Club rooms at Half Time to share some inspirational words of wisdom with the players.

Val and Max's contributions to the OCGFC were recognised by the Victorian Amateur Football Association who this year named the  Premier B Women’s Reserves trophy as the Val Evans Premiership Cup and the Division 3 Men's Reserves cup has been named the Max Evans Premiership Cup.

Val and Max are proud past Carey parents to Mark Evans (1983) and past Carey grandparents to Jess Evans (2016) and Sam Evans (2019).

Whilst never attending the School, Val and Max given so much of their time, energy, passion and love to Carey, the Old Carey Grammarians Association and the Old Carey Grammarians Football Club. They epitomise the values and ethos of our community and is truly deserving of being named a Companion of the Old Carey Grammarians Association.

Val remarked:
"I was so surprised and profoundly honoured to receive these awards for my husband and myself. Anything we did to support and strengthen these special community bonds was repaid tenfold by the love, respect and meaningful and continuing support and friendship we received in return."

OCGA Patron - Jonathan Walter

Throughout our history, the OCGA has shared a strong connection with the Headmasters and Principals of Carey Baptist Grammar School. The inaugural OCGA President was foundation Headmaster Harold Steele, and the first-ever OCGA Council meeting was held at Stuart Hickman's house.

There has been a long-standing tradition for Headmasters/Principals of Carey to be appointed as Patron of the OCGA, in recognition of the important role they play in leading the Carey Community, which of course comprises all Old Carey Grammarians.

We were delighted to continue this nearly century-old tradition by appointing Jonathan Walter as OCGA Patron.

Jonathan was officially inducted at our End of Year Celebration where he was presented with an OCGA tie by our oldest-living Honoured Life Member, Ray Reed (1949) and an Old Carey cap by 2023 School Captain Greta Wansborough.

Honorary Chaplain of the OCGA - Rev. Gerry Riviere

The Old Carey Grammarians Association sincerely congratulates Reverend Gerry Riviere who is retiring from Carey after a combined 23 years of dedicated service.

Rev Riviere, or "Rev" as he is fondly called, has been an enthusiastic, caring and positive influence on generations of Carey students through his roles as Junior School Chaplain (1992 - 2001) and Senior Chaplain (2011 - 2023). He has also supported many Old Carey Grammarians and their families through difficult times in their lives beyond school.

Rev has provided great service to the OCGA, including conducting our annual Memorial Services, delivering Grace at OCGA functions and much more.

At the 2023 Torch Assembly, Rev received a standing ovation after he sung his favourite hymn, Amazing Grace, with gusto! The Old Carey Grammarians Association proudly join current Carey students in applauding Rev Riviere on his outstanding service to the Carey community and wish him all the very best for his retirement!

We are very pleased that the Rev's long-standing association with the Carey community will continue in 2024 and beyond as he takes on the role of Honorary Chaplain of the OCGA.

President's Award - Michael Tarrant

At our End of Year Celebration, OCGA President Sam Ponsofrd presented a 2023 President's Award to Michael Tarrant, President of the Old Carey Grammarians Football Club.

Michael is an extraordinary President of the Old Carey Football Club. He puts in hours and hours a week into making the club the most supportive, inclusive, empowered and ambitious environment it can be.

Under his leadership, the Club took the bold step this year of relaunching their women's program. Relaunching the program was a huge mountain to climb and took considerable resources, finances and countless volunteer hours. But under Michael's leadership, the women's program is back, better than ever! The Women's team reached the Grand Final this year and the future is looking incredibly bright.

Even over the summer break, he is dedicating so much time to set up the men's program for future success. He is working tirelessly to recruit players, bringing on board sponsors and cultivating such a strong sense of community.

President's Award - Jessica Darmos (2018)

A President's Award was also presented to OCGA Secretary: Jessica Darmos (2018).

Jess is a passionate, dedicated and tremendously hard-working Secretary, who in just a short time in office has had a profoundly positive impact on the OCGA

Jess was responsible for the process of altering our rules this year, to ensure strong, effective governance of the OCGA.

She was also responsible for drafting and launching our Equality and Diversity Policy which is a wonderful legacy that will impact countless Old Carey Grammarians for many years to come.

It is wonderful that Jess can be remembered, not only as the first-ever female secretary of the OCGA, but as a truly outstanding secretary who has in just over a year in office, has had an extraordinarily positive impact on the OCGA.
