Introducing OCGA's Newest Council Members
Tuesday, 4 July 2023
New Council Members:

At our recent Annual General Meeting, we were delighted to welcome a group of competent, skilled and highly passionate Members aboard the OCGA Council. With a diverse, dynamic group of Members aboard Council, we have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of our Association.

Matthew Blanch (2018)

Matt graduated Carey in the class of 2018, having attended the school since ELC. He participated fully in the life of Carey as a student, taking on the leadership positions of Debating and School Community captain and committing himself to a high standard of work, achieving subject prizes and the Henry Meeks Gold Medal . He is still friends with many of his classmates from Carey; school having been formative both socially and personally for him.

Professionally, Matt’s experience chairing a Youth Advisory Committee in an allied health service provider for the last 3 years has equipped him well to participate in Council work. He is familiar with deliberative work environments that involve a variety of stakeholders, and he enjoys working with others to achieve the best results. Matt’s work as a youth advocate since
leaving Carey has taught him the value of incorporating a range of perspectives, and in his capacity as an advocate he has worked closely with stakeholders of all ages to connect better with young clients. Synthesising the valuable contributions of all generations of Carey alumni, then, is something he is excited to be a part of.

Harrison Carr (2022):

Harrison began his Carey journey in Year 4 and graduated in 2022, having served as School Captain alongside Sasha Edney. He cherished his time at Carey and was throughly involved in all aspects of the School, including sports, performing arts and outdoor education. He embraced every opportunity available to him at Carey and consequently built lifelong connections.

Harrison was fortunate enough to work as an Outdoor Education program assistant on Carey’s new immersive Zero Program in North Queensland, where he thoroughly enjoyed seeing Carey students develop friendships and experience a unique view of life outside Victoria.

Harrison currently holds his Recreational Pilots Licence and is in the final stages of joining the RAAF as a pilot.

Harrison joined the OCGA Council in mid-2023 and is looking forward to being a part of the Association.

Sasha Edney (2022):

Sasha Edney, a Carey graduate of 2022, had the privilege of serving as one of the School Co-Captains alongside Harrison Carr. After transferring from Camberwell Girls Grammar to Carey in Year 9, Sasha quickly realized it was one of the best decisions she ever made. Engaging in various extracurricular activities such as Rowing and participating in school musicals, Sasha enjoyed a diverse and enriching school experience. While her favorite subject in Year 12 was French, she has now embarked on a scientific path in her tertiary studies at Monash University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science Advanced and Global Challenges. This course encompasses both foundational scientific knowledge and problem-solving on a global scale through leadership and collaboration.

Passionate about maintaining connections with her alma mater, Sasha eagerly anticipates joining the OCGA. She believes in nurturing the bond between past alumni and Carey, as she experienced incredible support throughout her own Carey journey. Sasha acknowledges the OCGA's role in continuing this sense of support beyond graduation. As a recent graduate, she understands the challenges of transitioning from school life and hopes to provide assistance and establish connections with her fellow Class of 2022 peers. Sasha looks forward to contributing ideas, organizing events, and being part of something greater than herself within the OCGA.

Fiona Hu (2016):

Fiona started her journey in Australia from Carey (Gadsden House) in 2014 from Shanghai, and graduated in 2016 as the first International Student to deliver the opening speech at Speech Night.

Fiona has previously served as a member of the OCGA Council. During the pandemic in 2020, while studying Business Specialist/Arts at Monash University, Fiona organised a pilot OCGA Career Networking Seminar to enhance the employability for international students in Australia. She also had the pleasure to come back to Carey as a Teaching Assistant to teach "Chinese as a Second Language".

After graduation, she continued her passion in career coaching and became a Jobs Victoria Mentor in the state government employment program, then a Recruitment Consultant in The Adecco Group.
By re-joining OCGA, Fiona wishes to create a strong alumni network and encourage the networking between local and international communities.

Patrick O'Bryan (2012):

Patrick graduated from Carey in 2012. Alongside his studies, Patrick was Co-captain of school, participated in music, sport, the performing arts and debating, and received the Senior Meeks Award for leadership, scholarship and co-curricular activity. Patrick holds a Juris Doctor, Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Music from the University of Melbourne.

Since graduating, Patrick has remained involved in the life of the school over a number of years: initially as a member of the OCGA Council, then as a committee member and performer with OCPAC. He has also competed for the Old Carey Cross Country Club.

In 2020, Patrick was admitted as a lawyer while working at the firm Allens, where he gained experience in commercial litigation and transactional business law. Patrick has demonstrated a commitment to community through an active pro bono practice, which has included advising the First Peoples' Assembly in negotiations with the State of Victoria to establish the Treaty Negotiation Framework and advising not-for-profit organisations, including the Australian Ballet School, in relation to their obligations under the corporations and ACNC legislation. In 2022, he was appointed as Associate to the Honourable Justice Hespe of the Federal Court, where he has developed experience in constitutional, administrative and taxation law. In September, he will commence as a lawyer at the Australian Government Solicitor.

Clare Stambe (2018)

Clare Stambe has been a member of the Carey community since 2006. She  graduated from Carey in 2018 as a top scholar, receiving an ATAR of 99.4 after completing the International Baccalaureate program during Year 11 and 12. Clare commenced a double degree of Law/Arts at Monash University in 2019. A notable experience during Clare’s time at university was her semester-long exchange to the internationally acclaimed university SciencesPo at their campus in Paris, France. Clare is hoping to complete her studies in 2024, and has her sights set on a career in international commercial law. The impact the Carey community has had on Clare is profound. Carey has not only facilitated and supported her academic journey thus far, but it has also played a major role in instilling Clare’s values, beliefs, and work ethic. Clare is delighted to join the OCGA and give back to the Carey community – a community that, over the past 15 years, has given her so much.

Nicholas Tonkes (1998)

Nicholas graduated from Carey in 1998, having been involved in debating, hockey, and music. Since graduating, Nicholas has worked in Management Consultancy, Investment Banking and Wealth Management. Today Nicholas is a Partner at a global management consulting firm. Nicholas previously studied at The University of Melbourne and the London School of Economics and Political Science in the fields of economics, finance and accounting. Nicholas still remains in close contact with friends from Carey. He enjoys playing tennis and cycling.

Ian Woolf (1971)

Ian's involvement with Carey has spanned an impressive 57 years, beginning in 1965. He has experienced Carey from multiple angles, including as a student, parent of three former students, and grandparent of six future Old Carey Grammarians. Ian graduated as School Captain in 1971 and first joined the OCGA Council in 1972.  He has served the OCGA with distinction for many years as a member of the Council, most notably as  President from 1995 to 1999. He has also served Old Carey Cricket Club, both as a committee member and as President. Ian's dedication to our community is evident in his 16-year tenure as a School Board Member, serving as Board Chair for 12 years. He worked closely with Ross Milikan and led the process of appointing past Principals Phil de Young and Phillip Grutzner. He is an Honoured Life Member of the OCGA, the School and the Old Carey Cricket Club.
