Message from the OCGA Council - 2 March
Thursday, 2 March 2023
It has been a busy few months for the OCGA Council. We have been actively launching numerous sub-committees, which will allow us to empower more individuals to be directly involved in advancing the important work of the Old Carey Grammarians Association. We have also been preparing for a number of exciting initiatives and events to occur this year. Stay tuned for further details!

OCGA Strategy
On Sunday 26 February, the OCGA Council and Chairs of our Sub-Committees partook in a full day strategy session. It was wonderful for us all to come together, re-affirm the key values which will be guiding us in all we do, identify our strategic priorities and vision and formulate a strategy for the next three years as we head towards the OCGA Centenary in 2025.

We look forward to sharing our strategic vision, encompassing our values and key priorities with you in the weeks ahead.

New Alumni and Community Manager – Kaushini Fernando
We are delighted to introduce to you Carey's new Alumni and Community Manager, Kaushini Fernando.
Kaushini joins the Carey Community from Melbourne Girls Grammar, where she was the Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator. She was previously Alumni Engagement Coordinator at William Angliss Institute and before that Alumni Engagement Coordinator at RMIT. Outside of her professional career, she is the Co-Chair of Women of Colour Australia, a non-for profit organisation that champions women of colour through programs of education, community support initiatives and advocacy work.

We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Kaushini thus far. She is an expert in her field, passionate, dynamic and full of fantastic ideas for the future of the OCGA. We are excited to work with her this year and beyond.

International Women’s Day Breakfast
We invite all OCGA Members to join us in celebrating International Women’s Day at Carey on Friday 10 March. Hear from Professor Silvana Marasco (1986) who shares insights about her career as a cardiothoracic surgeon and her journey since leaving Carey.

Silvana is the Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Alfred Hospital. Being one of only 11 female cardiothoracic surgeons in Australia, she is particularly passionate about preventing and treating heart disease – especially as it is not commonly known that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Silvana is committed to medical research as a way of giving back and has published over 160 peer reviewed journal articles and 14 book chapters. Her research interests have focussed on chest trauma, transplantation outcomes and innovations in surgical techniques, and over the course of her career, Silvana has been awarded over $15 million in competitive research grants.

This will be a free event sponsored by the OCGA.
If you wish to attend this event, please register here.

Amber’s White Light
The OCGA is a proud supporter of Amber’s White Light, a foundation set up to honour the memory of Amber Wraith (2020) who tragically passed away last year. The charity will support causes related to youth mental health.

Amber’s White Light will be a partner charity for Run the Tan (RTT) on 30 April, an event where individuals run or walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens and raise funds and awareness for mental health causes. There will be an Old Carey Grammarians Association team participating on the day. We want to send a strong signal of support to the Wraith Family and help play our part in raising funds and awareness for youth mental health. We will be running a sausage sizzle and will have a marquee on the day for OCGA Members to socialise and relax in before and after the event.
If you wish to support Amber’s White Light by participating in this event, please register here and join the Old Carey Grammarians Association team.

Members of the OCGA Council will be running on the day and we hope to see you there!

Invitation to join a Sub-Committee:
Following our Strategy Session, we are excited to launch our sub-committees and recruit new members to help establish these groups:

  • Young Alumni: supporting Carey alumni aged 30 and under by providing opportunities for social connection, mentoring and networking.
  • Careers and Networking: supporting all Carey alumni to pursue professional development, advance in their careers and form invaluable networks.
  • Social Impact: leading our efforts to support causes close to the hearts of Carey community members.
  • International Alumni: engaging and supporting former Carey International students and alumni now living abroad.
  • Finance: overseeing the finances, budgets and investments of the Old Carey Grammarians Association
  • Centenary Planning: commencing the process of planning events and initiatives for the OCGA's Centenary in 2025
  • Pride: running events and initiatives for LGBTQIA+ and ally alumni.

Joining these sub-committees is a great opportunity to develop new skills, serve our community and meet new people!

If you are interested in joining any of the sub-committees or have any questions, please email ocga@carey.com.au.

The Old Carey Grammarians Association is here to serve and represent all of our over 20,000 members. If you have any ideas, questions or if there is anything we can do to assist you, please don't hesitate to reach out to ocga@carey.com.au.
