The Regional Education Support Network (RESN) is a not-for-profit organisation providing free, high-quality education support to rural and regional students across Victoria and New South Wales. RESN is a network of passionate university student volunteers working to create an Australia in which geography does not dictate access to high-quality education support. Since 2018, RESN has served over 2,000 students and answered nearly 10,000 student questions via their online portal.

When RESN’s founders started university, they met a variety of people from across Australia and quickly realised the immense disparity between educational opportunities around the country. Metropolitan students often have a support network of teachers, tutors and unlimited access to additional study resources. By comparison, insufficient funding often inhibits access to practice exams and other materials for students in rural and regional areas. This lack of resources is compounded by a smaller pool of teachers to turn to for support, as well as a distinct absence of a reliable tutoring network.

The founders saw the opportunity to do something about this education gap, and RESN was born. They recognised that technology could connect passionate tutors with the rural and regional students who most need their support. RESN started in Victoria in 2018, and has since expanded to New South Wales as their network of schools and volunteers has grown.

RESN offers a unique value proposition for both students and volunteers. Students value RESN’s services because they are available anytime, anywhere via the online portal, and are completely free. RESN’s staff and tutor volunteers join a network of motivated, like-minded individuals and develop valuable career skills. Their volunteers have gone on to careers as doctors, lawyers, and government advisors in part thanks to the skills they learned during their time at RESN.

RESN is immensely grateful for the Old Carey Grammarians Association’s generous financial support of its work. Thanks to RESN’s volunteer model, overhead costs are very low and funds can be spent on high-value projects. OCGA funding has gone to support RESN’s technological upgrades, travel costs to visit regional schools, prizes for our most active tutors, and many other important parts of their operations. RESN hopes to continue to work with the OCGA to increase access to high-quality education support across rural and regional Australia.
