When Hugh Evans (2001) was 13 and a student at Carey, a guest speaker from World Vision inspired him by highlighting that everyone has the potential to positively impact global issues. It was this moment that started his journey to co-founding the Oaktree Foundation with fellow Carey alum Nic Mackay (2001), and, later, Global Citizen. Under Hugh's leadership, Global Citizen has grown into the world's leading international advocacy organisation driving action to end extreme poverty. In recognition of his 'visionary leadership and innovation in the mission to end extreme poverty', Hugh was awarded the 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize in Seoul, Korea on 11 April, a prestigious and globally respected honour celebrating individuals making significant contributions to peace and human development. Learn more about Global Citizen. ![]() On accepting the award, Hugh said, 'I am deeply honoured to receive the 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize. While over $49 billion has been committed toward the end of extreme poverty, impacting 1.3 billion lives, our mission is more critical now than ever before. We are rising to the challenge – we're innovating, expanding and will be activating across five continents in the coming year. I share this award with our incredible team, long-standing partners, generous supporters and global citizens everywhere who have taken action with us over the past decade and beyond.' In 2005, Hugh was also awarded the Carey Medal, which recognises a member of the Carey community who has shown exceptional and outstanding service to the wider community either within the state, nationwide or internationally. At the time, he was only four years out of school. He has gone on to dedicate his life to social outreach and leading positive change on a global scale. We can't wait to see what he does next. If you know of someone in the Carey community who you believe is worthy of recognition, nominate them for the Carey Medal. The award can recognise selfless achievements of a high profile or not, made in a short time or carried out over longer periods of time. The recipient can be starting out in their community service journey, or have years of service experiences. Nominations for the 2025 Carey Medal close on 31 May. |
