You may be aware of information published in the media yesterday regarding historical abuse allegations made against Carey staff members from the 1960s to 1990s. Abuse in any form can have a profound and detrimental effect. We acknowledge the sadness and distress raised by these matters and want to take the opportunity to reiterate our approach. When allegations of historical abuse were first raised, we communicated to the entire Carey community, encouraging any affected individuals to contact us directly, so that we could offer our support. Our approach continues to be one of utmost transparency and our priority is to provide care and compassion to those impacted. I have personally met with past students and heard their stories and experiences. I aim to take a trauma-informed and survivor-focussed approach to all such interactions, in keeping with the recommendations of the Royal Commission. I realise the importance of a pastoral approach to any allegations while ensuring we meet all reporting requirements. Yesterday's media makes allegations about numbers of perpetrators and their victims which is not in alignment with the School's knowledge and understanding of matters. If there is further information in the hands of the law firm quoted, it has been withheld from us, despite our approaches for information. We will continue to proactively assist and expedite any related legal processes in order to provide the necessary support to those impacted. I am here to listen and assist these alumni in their journey. It is through this process we can learn from the past and use this to inform our current policies and processes. Anyone wishing to speak with me is always welcome and will find care and support through their engagement with the School. With best wishes
